Earlier today, I heard Gary Sinise talking on the radio about how his Lt. Dan Band tours military bases to show support for the troops. Except for very rare tours, authors don't get to do that sort of thing. And how many Soldiers would bother coming out to see an author, if we did?
But I had another idea. I've recently started delving into the world of e-books, mostly around the e-book release of my horror epic The Slab. And I thought, okay, I can't tour those places, but through the day job I've become somewhat familiar with how things work in today's military. So there is something I can do, a small attempt to celebrate the 4th of July all month long. During the month of July, I'll provide a free e-book (or e0books) to any active duty military personnel, whether deployed in a combat zone, a far-flung base or ship, or right here in the States. I don't have the rights to give away any of my licensed works, but original novels The Slab, Cold Black Hearts, River Runs Red, Missing White Girl, and Carnival Summer are all fair game, as are any other e-books I might happen to release this month (hint, hint).
All you have to do, if you're active duty, is to drop me an e-mail using your .mil account. You can reach me at jmariotte@aol.com, or go on the military's global address book and find me there (though I'll reply from the aol address). Let me know which book you want (descriptions can be found at jeffmariotte.com), and what your preferred format or reader is. I think I can get stuff formatted for just about any e-reader, or if nothing else in PDF for on-screen reading. I'm not doing this to collect e-mail addresses, and promise not to share yours or put you on a mailing list.
If you're not active duty, but know someone who is, please pass the word along. Any other authors who want to join in, feel free. Let's let our Soldiers know we're thinking about them.

Great idea, Jeff. Wonderful way to show support for our troops.
